Relocating can be difficult – but it doesn't have to be that way. Your moving experience can either be a treat, or a torture, depending on how you approach you move. The best way to handle the stress of moving is to plan your carefully, and keep a positive attitude!

Before the Move |
Take a look around and see what needs to be moved and what does not need to be moved. Try to have a garage sale to get rid yourself of items you don’t need to keep, and also get some extra cash in your pocket.
Start with plan and organize everything. Like all big projects, you need to make a plan and stick to it. A calendar plan is easiest, because you can divide the tasks up by day, making it easier to stay on schedule.
First thing, gather moving supplies: boxes, tape, newspapers, etc. Get with your local supermarkets to try to get some free boxes. Wardrobe boxes can also be purchased to simplify your move.
You will need to hire reputable movers or rent a moving truck. If you plan to use a mover, make sure to get multiple quotes and check each company with the BBB (Better Business Bureau). It’s a good idea to ask the movers for references. If you decide to use a mover, seriously consider getting the insurance.
Consult your Realtor or title company to make sure everything is going as schedule and that you have an accurate date. Submit your change of address form with the U.S. Postal Service – this can now be done online. If you have children, take care of registering them at their new school ahead of time.
About two weeks before your move date, contact all of your utility providers, plus any lawn service, newspaper delivery, house cleaning services, etc. to schedule a cutoff date. While you are on the phone with the utility and phone companies, go ahead and schedule the date to start service at your new place.
When it’s time to start packing, be sure to keep track of your valuable items. Use luggage and travel bags to their full potential – don’t transport them empty – fill them up with things you need to move. Label your boxes well with the room where they will go, and what’s inside.
If you have children, it’s helpful to label a box for them to unpack so that they can stay entertained with books, movies, toys, etc. Make sure to child-proof your new home before move day.
Don’t forget to leave tools behind for taking apart beds and furniture.

During The Move |
Move day can be very stressful. There are so many things going on at once, it can get a little hectic. If you have valuable or irreplaceable items, you may want to consider moving them yourself to provide that extra TLC. Most movers will give you a inventory sheet. If they don’t, create one yourself to ensure everything gets from point A to point B.
Once you think everything is moved out, take a final walk-through to make sure nothing was left behind. Before leaving, make sure to turn off the water heater and lower the thermostats.
Be sure the movers have directions to your new place, and make sure that they have a way to contact you. If possible, give them a secondary contact number because there may not be the best cell phone coverage at your new place. When the movers are finished, look over everything, and make sure there is no damage. They will most likely require final payment at that time, and if you are satisfied, a tip is customary.
If possible, schedule family recreation time to get away from the stress of moving. Try to keep friends and family close during this time for support and possible free labor.
Important: Plan and make time to eat regular, well-balanced meals. Hunger can amplify stress.

After the Move |
| You will have the obvious unpacking to do, but you will also want to check and make sure all of your utilities are still on schedule. If you purchased the movers insurance, make note of any damaged items as you unpack.
Go around and replace all of your fire alarm batteries just to be on the safe side. Replace all of the locks in your new home. Make sure to thank everyone who helped you during your move. Send your friends and family a letter or email letting them know that you moved and your new address.
